Development of an Empirical Model for Photosynthetically Active Radiation using Global Horizontal Irradiance in Korea

Photosynthetically active radiation (PAR; wavelength 400 ~ 700 nm) is the spectral range of solar used by plants for photosynthesis. PAR data are in various fields research, such as that focusing on surface vegetation growth, light energy–chemical energy conversion process, and terrestrial carbon cycle. In this study, we analyze variability between Global Horizontal Irradiance (GHI) according to zenith angle, clearness index, using GHI observations from 2016 2020 at Anmyeondo Flux Tower Korea Forest Research Institute (KFRI). We confirm decreases ratio increases atmospheric optical path increases. also confirmed increased decreased index increased. Using results these relationships prior studies, develop evaluate empirical models estimate GHI. The R2 representing estimation accuracy model was 0.988 0.996, indicating very high accuracy. With results, observation KFRI’s Wando, Pyeongchang, Samcheok Towers during same period showed 0.977 0.988, confirming its transferability other regions. Despite R2, Mean Bias Error (MBE) each site shown be different. To solve problem, a with relative humidity temperature developed apply regional conditions site, similar less MBE. It expected study will policy references attracting power complexes drawing up seasonal map Korean peninsula observed Meteorological Administration's Automated Synoptic Observing System (ASOS).
